School of Culture and Communication, Shandong University, Weihai, is formerly known as Chinese Department in Weihai Branch, Shandong University. Among the first undergraduate majors to accept students on Weihai Campus, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature began to enroll undergraduates in 1987.
After more than 20 years of development and construction, the School has made tremendous progress in discipline construction, talent cultivation, scientific research and social services, and formed a favorable situation characterized by the solid style of study, organized discipline and specialty, well-structured academic echelon, excellent teaching quality and outstanding achievements of student work.
The School currently has more than 1,300 students, including over 100 postgraduate and doctoral students, more than 880 undergraduates, and nearly 400 international students. There are 80 faculty members, including 53 full-time teachers, among which there are 12 professors, 16 associate professors, 6 doctoral advisors and 18 graduates’ advisors.
The current Dean of School of Culture and Communication is Zhang Hongjun, the Secretary of CPC Committee Yu Peili, Associate Dean Guan Ensen, Zhou Xinshun and Yin Hailiang, and Vice Secretary of CPC Committee Zhou Yuhong.
The School now consists of several teaching and research institutes, including four departments (Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Department of Journalism , Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and Department of Chinese Language and Culture engaged in the education of international students) and several research institutes and centers ( Institute of Language and Literature, Institute of Journalism and Communication, Institute of Chinese Characters and Modern Poetry Research Center).
At present, the School offers 3 majors for undergraduate education, the Chinese Language and Literature, Journalism and International Education of Chinese Language. And it has M.A. programs in Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Literature Theories, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics and Journalism, as well as Ph.D. programs in the first three majors. In 2009, the major of Chinese Language and Literature was rated as the brand specialty in Shandong Province.
In recent years, our teachers and researchers of the School have published more than 50 academic monographs, and over one thousand academic papers. The faculty has undertaken more than 70 scientific research projects supported by the National Funds of Social Sciences, the Social Science Fund of Ministry of Education, the Provincial Social Science Fund, and various ministries. The School has made outstanding achievements in the construction of undergraduate teaching quality system, and accumulated hundreds of thousands of yuan of financial support from all parties in the construction of various projects such as brand specialty, high-quality courses, teaching and research projects and textbook construction, ranking first in the school. Good teaching quality and students’ solid style of study guarantee the continuous improvement of students' comprehensive quality. Hundreds of graduates have been admitted into Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Renmin University of China, Wuhan University, Beijing Normal University and other prestigious universities. The graduates taking jobs relevant to their major or not are also well received by all sectors of society due to their solid foundation, strong adaptability and wide employment.
Under the guidance of the new development goal of “highlighting SDU’s characteristics to be the first-class in China and keep with the world level” of Shandong University, all the teachers and students of our School, with full enthusiasm and enterprising spirit, will adhere to the tradition of “being good at literature and history” to work hard, unite in a concerted efforts and make continuous innovations so as to strive for a higher level of Shandong university, Weihai.
